Grimm Revisited

Mention of fairytales reminded me of Anne Sexton's book, Transformations, published in 1971. In it she has a selection of poems that rewrite some of the Grimm's fairytales. They are wonderfully scardonic.  My favorite is "Cinderella." Here's the final stanza:

Cinderella and the prince
lived, they say, happily ever after,
like two dolls in a museum case
never bothered by diapers or dust,
never arguing over the timing of an egg,
never telling the same story twice,
never getting a middle-aged spread,
their darling smiles pasted on for eternity.
Regular Bobbsey Twins.
That story.

Here's a link where you can find the entire poem:

  1. Jules Feiffer cartoon from 1968 -

Prince to girl: I love you.
    I said I Love You.
    I LOVE YOU.
Girl: I'm sorry. Were you talking to me?
Prince: I said I LOVE YOU.
Girl: Forgive me. I can't stop daydreaming. What did you say?
    Prince walking out of frame.
Girl: Someday a handsome young prince will come along - and he will love me.

    "That story"...another view...

    Have a good evening.

  3. Bluecat: Interesting. Is the prince supposed to represent her "true love" and she's too busy dreaming about love that she doesn't recognize it? Have you ever read "The Beast in the Jungle" by Henry James? Same theme.

    Judith: LOL

  4. Yes, my interpretation is that she's too busy daydreaming to recognize what's there for her. I haven't read that James work but will look for it and I agree with Judith - don't get me started, either.

Re: totems - animals can come to you in a dream or in life. If you've always loved rabbits, maybe had a stuffed one as a child, you might see rabbits everywhere. A rabbit might appear in a book you're reading or you see live ones out and about or you get a card in the mail with a bunny on the front. It might be similar to what happens when you shop for a new car. Suddenly you notice there are Ford Escorts everywhere. I guess it's about awareness of the environment and what nature is trying to tell us. And it's fun to get Rio stirred up!
